Environmental Assessment of Larvicide Use

چکیده
The objective of the Onchocerciasis Control Progininme (OCP) is to eliminate onchocerciasis as a disease of public îinportance and as an obstacle to socio-economic development. The OCP was initially based solely OIT the control of the blaclcfly vector, Simulium damnosum sensu lato, by insecticide spraying of the breeding sites on river systems, where larval stages develop. Results of monitoring the environmental effects and the process of risk assessment for nao insecticides are reviaued. The achieuetnents of this strategy are outlined here by Davide Calamari, Laurent Yameogo, Jean-Marc Hougard and Clzristian Leveque.

Hazard/Risk Assessment HAZARD ASSESSMENT OF TEMEPHOS APPLIED TO A SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, USA, SALT MARSH COMMUNITY
This investigation was undertaken to determine whether the mosquito larvicide temephos (applied as Abate 4-Et) created an environmental hazard for nontarget organisms in a southwest Florida salt marsh community. Field toxicity tests were performed during routine larvicide applications using larvae of salt marsh crabs (Aratus pesonii and Uca rapax) and adult Mysidopsis bahia. Laboratory toxicity...
متن کاملChitosan nanocapsules of tarragon essential oil with low cytotoxicity and long-lasting activity as a green nano-larvicide
Frequent use of synthetic larvicides has led to the development of resistance in many species of mosquitoes as well as risk of environmental pollution. Recently, encapsulating essential oils (EOs) in surfactants or polymers is being employed as an approach to control the volatility of EOs as green larvicides. In this research, components of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) essential oil were id...
متن کاملIdentification of Larvicide-Resistant Catch Basins from Three Years of Larvicide Trials in a Suburb of Chicago, IL
The tens of thousands of catch basins found in many urban areas are a primary target of local vector control agencies for seasonal application of extended-release larvicides. A concern with using larvicides in these structures is that active ingredients can be hampered by high flows, debris, and sediment, all of which are common to these structures. As such a certain proportion of basins may be...
متن کاملBiosynthesis of 130-kilodalton mosquito larvicide in the cyanobacterium Agmenellum quadruplicatum PR-6.
The 130-kilodalton mosquito larvicidal gene, cloned from Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, was introduced into the cyanobacterium Agmenellum quadruplicatum PR-6 by plasmid transformation. Transformed cells synthesized 130-kilodalton delta-endotoxin protein and showed mosquito larvicidal activity. Results demonstrate a potential use of a cyanobacterium for biological control of mosquitoes.
متن کاملObserved Loss and Ineffectiveness of Mosquito Larvicides Applied to Catch Basins in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago IL, 2014
In the northeastern part of the greater Chicago metropolitan area, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) treats approximately 50,000 catch basins each season with larvicide tablets as part of its effort to reduce local populations of the West Nile virus (WNV) vector Culex pipiens. During the 2014 season, an NSMAD technician monitored a subset of 60-195 basins weekly for 18 weeks a...
